ISRA welcomes further step in green ship recycling

The International Ship Recycling Association congratulates its Turkish member LEYAL with its successful application for the European List of ship recycling facilities, based on the new European Ship Recycling Regulation. This regulation is regarded as the highest worldwide standard for the safe and environmentally friendly recycling of ships and offshore units, which also covers the proper final disposal of hazardous materials. LEYAL becomes the first non-European ship recycling facility to join the EU List of approved facilities under this new regulation.

ISRA considers the successful application of LEYAL as an important step in the proliferation of safe and green operating ship recycling facilities offering the industry sustainable ship recycling options, both in realizing significant asset values and in green recycling operations. “The recognition of these excellent recycling facility is a big step forward contributing to the expansion of worldwide responsible ship recycling”, says ISRA director Reinoud Pijpers.

ISRA underlines the observations of EU Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella who earlier said: “The EU is committed to reducing the impact of EU shipping industry on the environment, including through better protection of environment and workers in ship recycling. The inclusion of the first yards located outside the EU is a major milestone and the recognition of very significant efforts and resources dedicated by the concerned yards towards this goal. The updated List will increase the recycling capacity of the European List, and give European ship owners a wider range of recycling options.”
