News item no. 11 April 2019

Letters sent by ISRA to EU-member states, the competent authorities in the EU and the EU-Commissioner Mr. K. Vella, concerning the illegal export of end of life ships.

The EU- Waste Shipment Regulation and the EU – Ship Recycling Regulation are sufficient to address a proper safe and sound recycling of ships. Enforcement of these regulations by the EU-member states lacks however because international cooperation between the member states is insufficiently organized. The illegal export of end of life ships continues.
ISRA wrote various letters to call upon a better coordination between the member states to end these practices:

  1. To the ministers responsible for the prevention of exports of end of life ships.
  2. To the Competent Authorities of the EU-countries for the EU Ship Recycling Regulation.
  3. To the Competent Authorities of the EU-countries of the EU-Waste Shipment Regulation.
  4. To the European Commissioner Mr. K.Vella.
  5. To the National Parliament of the Netherlands.
